Here are some guidelines to help you determine how many hours of coverage you might need:
-
We, like most photographers, like to start about 2 hours prior to ceremony time. Most churches require that you finish posed pictures 45 minutes before the ceremony starts. This is a good idea as guests start arriving and you can have a little down time to get ready for the ceremony. We, also, will shoot some getting ready candids during this time.
-
Will you see each other prior to the wedding for posed pictures? If yes, you will save 20 to 45 minutes after the ceremony by not having to have another family portrait session and wedding party session.
-
How big is your wedding party and how many family members and how many do you want photographed? The bigger the crowd the longer posed pictures will take.
-
How long is your ceremony going to last. Remember, your wedding start time is when family members are seated. It takes time for parents and grandparents to be seated as well as for bridesmaids, ringbearers and flower girls to walk down the aisle.
- Are you planning anything at the church after the ceremony? Receiving line, bubbles etc can take a long time to get everyone outside and lined up.
-
How far is it to the reception? Even if it is only a couple of miles you still need to allow for getting in cars and then parking and getting organized for more pictures. Some of the wedding party will be running back in the church to get things out of the dressing room or running in at the reception to pass things off to mom or husband. Always allow at least 15-20 minutes for even very close receptions.
-
Will you do outdoor pictures before the reception starts? Usually a good idea because you want guests to have time to get in and seated for your introduction to the reception.
-
What type of dinner are you having at the reception? A served dinner can take more than 2 hours for a large number of guests. There is not much to photograph during dinner and the events cannot start until it is over.
-
Do you want dancing and party candids at the reception or just the events to be covered? Allow 30 minutes to an hour after events are finished for these.
-
Do you have out of town guests, work friends, school friends, sorority sisters or any other groups that you don't want at the church 2 hours before the ceremony that you want pictures with? Time for these will vary by how many groups and how many people in each group.

Standard wedding photography timeline: 5 to 7 hours
- 1 hr 15 minutes for pre ceremony posed pictures
- 45 minutes till ceremony starts
- 30 minutes to 1 1/2 hrs for ceremony
- 15 to 45 minutes for family pictures with bride and groom
- 20 to 30 minutes to reach reception and get everyone regrouped
- 15 to 30 minutes of wedding party and couple photos outside at reception
- 2 to 4 hours of reception coverage depending on dinner style (served, buffett or hors dourves)
Review the list at the right to get an idea of how much wedding day coverage you might need. If it's in your budget, don't scrimp on time. It will make the whole day feel rushed.
